How do I feel about math?

Well, there is math as a school subject and just plain math. Math was an easy subject for me in school because, unlike other things that I could not relate to but had to memorize, math sort of made sense... at least up to high school. Geometry was a bit more problematic and I wish I had had more of it or maybe in a different approach. Later I studied Engineering so I went through advanced math up to partial differential equations, special functions, advanced linear algebra and things like those. Some of those subjects made it more difficult for me to "make connections" with the concepts but I really liked the challenge to think abstractly. Studying physics helped me see some of the connections between concepts in math and physical reality and also why those connections are not necessary or fundamental. At the moment I am more interested in the "human/social" aspects of the world so my training in math and computer science is not as central. That being said, the reason why I am writing this is because I work with the Math Forum and care about the teaching and learning of K-12 mathematics, as part of the Virtual Math Teams project, so math is certainly something I am currently find interesting.

The mathematics of musics, such as series related to chord progressions, why we like them (well, at least we all seem to like some of them here in the west so maybe it is a cultural thing)
Mathematical modeling, specially "swarm" or distributed modeling

Part B: How small if the black socks are even?

The same two approaches that were used for part A can be pursued to find what the smallest number of socks would be if the number of black socks is an even number. For example the following table shows all the cases with 2, 4 and 6 black socks and their probabilities, until a "successful case" was found with 21 socks (15 red socks and 6 black socks):


Using the formula that Team 5 presented for part A, a similar table can be constructed. In this case we are tracking the variables in the formula until we find a successful case:
