This is a page constructed by the Spring 2007 course on Human-Computer Interaction at Drexel's I-School. It summarizes and collects knowledge about designing social interaction software.
Individuals should add and edit information here throughout the course, as they come upon useful information or develop new ideas. Be sure to sign your entries with 4 ~'s (you must be logged in).

Some observations on groups in the VMT forum

Group observations.....

I have found the most interesting part of this course has been the group dynmaics. I'm starting this discussion NOT as a place to complain but as a place to help researchers understand the complexity of the group experience and why their software may not be able to control the group experience as they hope it well.

My first observation is that this forum isn't unlike real time group meetings where people who know more or type faster or are comfortable with the whiteboard they tend to dominate the work area. The one thing that is missing is the non-verbal communications. So if you are a slow processor of information this forum still doesn't give you time to process information at your own pace for maximum input. The assignments that are given are supposed to take about 3 one hour sessions when in reality they take much longer. This tells me that maybe we don't have what we need to communicate fast enough to complete these assignments in a timely manner. maybe though its because we should be solving math problems instead of doing summaries and ??? Doing what the forum was made for might also give the groups a better perspective on enhancements for it. K8 22:21, 20 May 2007 (EDT)

These are important considerations. I usually teach this course in a classroom. The first week I take the class to a computer lab and have them use VMT to solve a math problem. Then they all complain, "Why do we have to do math?" This quarter, I figured you would get plenty of practice with the technology by doing your assignments in it, so we did not do any math. Also, you are reading many papers about kids doing math in VMT. Do you think your group processes are similar to theirs?

How should the system that is being designed, developed and researched at Drexel -— the Virtual Math Teams (VMT) online environment -— be designed to enhance social computing, collaborative learning, knowledge construction and community building?


HARDWARE!! I really think a keyboard with math symbols would be helpful especially in the elementary school level when they are first starting to use computers!K8 22:24, 20 May 2007 (EDT) Instead of a hardware keyboard, an on-screen soft keyboard would work well. MENTORING!! I think a user-mentor matching capability would help transition new users to the VMT environment. Many corporate environments pair up experienced workers with new hires to provide that extra support and attention until the user is comfortable with their setting. This idea can be transferred over to the VMT environment. In my opinion, this type of social networking may provide more focused, quality knowledge building. Also, typically mentees would become mentors to others in the future which will also assist in the knowledge transfer from "generation" to generation. Olivia 00:00, 22 May 2007 (EDT)

Being able to click on links posted in the chat window or collected from the chat window in a "useful links" collection tab would be helpful; perhaps labelling them by excerpts in the chat Bertha 21:03, 24 May 2007 (EDT)
